The Cause: Since 1957. Camping Unlimited for the Developmentally Disabled has provided “a place for exceptional people to be themselves”.  We offer independence-building recreation, fun and friendship for children and adults with special needs and vital out-of-home respite to their parents and caregivers, often the only break they have from this vital duty. At the same time, we offer an opportunity, often transformative, for young people to discover their best selves helping our campers.

Our many programs provide families urgently needed relief from the daily demands of care and supervision while fostering independence, nurturing responsibility, developing competence, and building lifelong friendships. A warm and supportive atmosphere of planned permissiveness encourages community, recreation, education, adventure, and fun in beautiful natural surroundings. Click here for heartfelt testimonials.

History:  Alexander Angel Krem, a special education teacher in San Leandro, began exposing his developmentally disabled students to nature by taking them camping – first in his backyard and then further afield.  He soon began taking his students camping in the Sierras. They prospered, and their parents helped advance Alex’s dream.  In 1957, Alex founded Camping Unlimited to formalize his vision.  In 1965, property in Boulder Creek was purchased and Camp Krem was born.  A sandhill ridgeline above towering redwoods provided a gorgeous view for campers in tents. Over time, Camp Krem grew to a camp with cabins, a dining hall, administration and medical buildings, a playground and a pool.  There was also tent camping for the more adventurous on the outskirts of the main camp.  In 2020, Camp Krem was destroyed by the CZU Lightning Complex Wildfire, but a new camp was soon purchased near Yosemite National Park.  We are now preparing for our fifth successful summer there.

As we enter our 69^th year, Alex’s vision is continued by his family and many of his friends, as well as by the generous support of the community.
